MELLOW: A Meditation Road Trip

On May 21st, 2025, Billy Rosenbeck of Mellow Elephant set out on a 10-hour road trip across Western Massachusetts to lead ten meditations in ten unexpected locations — jails, schools, firehouses, police stations, a senior center,  and seemingly everywhere else..

MELLOW: A Meditation Road Trip proves that meditation works anywhere because the meditation works everywhere — even in places you wouldn't expect to find it, even for people who might not think meditation is for them.

The Co-Pilots.

From start to finish, this whole endeavor was captured, edited, and transformed into its final form by two wonderful, creative videographers: Aiden McDonald of Visual Sound Productions and Kayla Ebner of Bold Heart Media.

While I got to do the fun part of this, the real work of this project was done by Aiden and Kayla, and I can't thank them enough for their talent, vision, effort, and patience. I had no idea all that a documentary entails, and this story wouldn't exist without them. A thousandth thank you's to Kayla. A thousand thank you's to Aiden.

The Route.

Starting first thing in the morning, we spent the day speeding up, so other people can slow down, and over the course of 10 hours, visited...

  • Hampshire County Jail & House of Corrections
  • Easthampton Public Safety Complex
  • Amherst Police Department
  • Hampden County Sheriff's Department
  • Springfield Department of Children and Families
  • Connecticut Department of Corrections
  • Pleasant View Senior Center
  • Kiley Middle School
  • Minnechaug Regional High School
  • The Urban Food Brood at Gasoline Alley

A huge thank you to the host sites and participants, who took a break from their busy days and working lives to slow down, re-connect, and give the practice a chance. It was an honor to sit with you all, and I hope we can practice together soon.

The Support.

Since nobody goes solo -- and since my mom always taught me not to show up empty handed -- our friends at NOSOLO sent along merch to give away to participants throughout the day.

NOSOLO is product with a purpose: an apparel brand born out of Newport, RI, NOSOLO donates 20% of all sales to the National Alliance for Mental Illness; they've also recently launched the NOSOLO Give Back Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to improve mental health on a global scale by providing scholarships, collaborating with schools, and enhancing outdoor community areas to create environments that support both mental and physical well-being.
